I joined RACQ in 2016 as a Process Analyst as part of the Business Improvement team. The role was a 6-month contract so was a risk to leave my previous employer where I had worked for almost 10 years. Within a few months, I secured a permanent role as a Business Process Specialist.

In 2019, my leader encouraged me to apply for RACQ’s female mentoring programme and I was successful at joining the programme, where I received mentoring and coaching from our leadership development team . Since then, I have been appointed Manager Strategic and Business Planning and have embraced the leadership role and building out a new team who I provide coaching/mentorship and guidance to regularly.

My career to date with RACQ has been full of opportunities and enabled me to develop both professionally and personally and I’m glad I took the ‘risk’ in joining such a great organisation and I’m excited to see where my career at RACQ will take me next over the coming years.

Having been a part of RACQ as employee for almost 10 years, I have been fortunate enough to experience many different areas of the organisation.

As a gay man, I have been able to assist and educate employees around how to speak appropriately to members and fellow employees through developing our internal “Embracing Gender Diversity” eLearning package. This package has helped to break down how to address people from all walks of life and how to have effective conversations with our members most importantly. Further to this, I have had the opportunity of being a part of the first ever LGBTQ+ Committee which will be launching shortly at RACQ, to greater support our employees who identify as a part of our community, and to ensure that our voice is being heard.

As well, I have been able to work across a few different business lines within my time at RACQ including Travel, Member and Community, an Human Resources. This has been through working out where I want to be and what my own values align too.

I can honestly say that it feels like I am with family when I am at work. RACQ is a diverse and inclusive workplace and I recommend it to anyone who is wanting to develop a career and feel like they are contributing to the efforts of the whole organisation, including the work of RACQ Foundation, Sponsorships, and feeling like you belong!

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

My RACQ journey began at the Indooroopilly branch in 2019. I completed the training session to be skilled across insurance, assistance and bank. I transferred in August 2021 into a Member Support Specialist for the Support Hub, assisting mostly our bank frontline staff but also occasionally our insurance and assistance staff.

My career development has now fast tracked and the last couple of months have been full of opportunities. I've been asked on several occasions to step up and cover for team managers that have been on leave and also covered our shift leader for six weeks. I recently joined the Future Leaders Program and have had many networking opportunities, including a design jam at QUT with our Ignite group. I am very proud of my growth throughout my time within RACQ and I thank my leaders here for creating such a nurturing work environment.

Billie-lee Stephens, Business Risk officer

I started with RACQ back in 2003 as an Analyst Developer, as part of the QUT cooperative education program, I was given the opportunity to work across multiple teams and including digital (back then just called Web), core systems and Testing. Over the years since I have been given the opportunity to progress my career and work across many roles and teams, expanding my networks, technical and leadership skillsets.

In this time, I feel I have given a lot to RACQ, and in return RACQ has given a lot to me as well. I have been able to take my career in different directions at different times, with leadership opportunities and when time came time to take a step back due to family RACQ supported me in that move too.

RACQ has given me the opportunity work on a range of diverse projects across multiple industries due to their range in business.

My favourite part is the people I meet and the relationships I have formed over the years… I still remember around 2010 walking into one of our tow truck partner offices and being welcomed in a way that made me feel like family.

For me it is about the people that work for RACQ.

Irene Pitts, Enterprise Architect

What I love about my job is 1) great team atmosphere, 2) workplace flexibility and 3) the opportunity to work different roles and the focus on employee development.

I started as a member engagement consultant nearly 10 years ago and our call centre would have themed days, centre wide competitions, fundraisers for different important causes. Our immediate teams would have regular meetings, outings and would celebrate each other in life events and career moves.

RACQ has a strong focus on career development and team leaders would often challenge their staff to think laterally and vertically in their regular meetings.

I was recently accepted in the 2022 Future Leaders Program which will help develop my leadership capability, expand my knowledge and experience across the business, access coaching and mentoring from senior manager, network with a diverse group of participants and managers for advice, support and guidance, and enhanced my career growth prospects. Can’t wait to see where this opportunity would take me in RACQ!
