Senior Technical Officer - Protection & High Voltage Testing

About the position:

An exciting opportunity exists for you to relocate to the Snowy Mountains as a Senior Technical Officer – Protection and HV Testing, leading a team of technicians in providing critical support across multiple teams within the organisation. In this senior role, you will be responsible for overseeing the installation, testing, servicing, commissioning, and fault finding of Protection Systems, as well as coordinating and performing high voltage (HV) testing on generators, transformers, and auxiliary plant. You will play a key role in ensuring the integrity and reliability of assets, while mentoring and guiding your team to deliver high-quality technical support across the organisation.

This position is based at Khancoban NSW and is not a DIDO or FIFO arrangement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing expertise and know-how to perform discrete tasks with specific input to risk management and test plans, identify and anticipate equipment issues and related risks for both protection and HV equipment, ensuring that appropriate controls are implemented and maintained.
  • Provide technical direction to the organisation in the protection requirements and issues affecting the operation and reliability of the equipment.
  • Perform high voltage testing of generation and transmission assets (i.e. Power transformers & generators).
  • Undertake equipment condition assessments on a routine basis, participate in scope development and review of specifications, undertake commissioning activities and investigation of faults to identify root causes.
  • Review, update and prepare technical documentation relating to the installation and testing of protection schemes and High Voltage plant, e.g. drawing mark-up and test procedures.
  • Write and deliver accurate and timely reporting on project and routine maintenance issues arising in a proactive and timely manner and providing mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure effective communication with regional and project stakeholders.

About you:

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • An electrical engineering degree or an Advanced Diploma in Electrical Supply Industry (ESI) or sufficient industry experience and willing to work towards an Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering/ESI. (essential)
  • Proficient with HV testing and/or Protection Testing (essential).
  • Experience in developing relay test plans (highly regarded)
  • Experience with Doble test equipment (highly regarded)
  • Minimum of 5 years industrial experience (preferred), experience in Power Generation (highly regarded).
  • Cert III Electrotechnology (highly regarded).
  • Strong computer literacy and experience using tools such as word documents, spreadsheets and data acquisition programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand technical specifications to develop testing documentation and conduct testing on protection schemes.
  • Technical knowledge of a variety of electrical apparatus and plants associated with heavy industry, together with strong analytical and research skills.
  • Experience in fault finding/troubleshooting, testing, maintenance and commissioning involving complex electrical, electronic and protection systems.
  • Good communication, report writing and problem solving skills.
  • Technical knowledge of testing and field analysis of High Voltage equipment.
  • Developed influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Appropriate Licences to meet work requirements including current drivers licence.
  • Personal alignment with Snowy Hydro values and behaviours.
