We have an exciting 2-year fixed term contract opportunity for a talented Specialist – Strategic Environment to join our highly skilled Environmental Approvals & Delivery team at Water Corporation. In this role, you will lead the delivery of environmental outcomes by providing expertise in environmental approvals under State and Commonwealth environmental legislation.

State Government is progressing infrastructure planning activities within the Oakajee, Maitland and Boodarie Strategic Industrial Areas (SIAs) to support economic growth and diversification. Water Corporation is undertaking planning to progress water supply options for these SIAs. You will provide specialist advice on environmental approvals pathways, environmental impact assessment, and deliver required approvals under environmental legislation to facilitate the design, construction, and operation of Water Corporation assets within the SIAs.

You’ll be based in Leederville. a lively suburb, 5 minutes from Perth’s CBD. There’s plenty of places to eat and hang out, and you’re only 5 minutes away from the nearest train station – an easy commute when you’re heading into the office.

This role will be reporting to the Team Lead – Approvals & Delivery

The role will involve:

  • Developing and implementing approvals strategies to secure project approvals under relevant State and Commonwealth legislation (Environmental Protection Act 1986 (Parts IV and V), Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999).
  • Applying critical and strategic thinking skills to assess proposed approvals pathways to meet state development priorities.
  • Undertaking constraints analysis of environmental values to support options analysis of SIAs. Provide technical advice to consultants undertaking options analysis of proposed SIA infrastructure and services.
  • Contributing to cross governmental working groups to support development of SIAs.
  • Researching and undertaking reviews of existing studies in/near SIAs and undertaking gap analysis
  • Identifying required studies, prepare scopes and manage consultants.
  • Proactively engaging with stakeholders (JTSI, Development WA, Port Authorities) to identify opportunities for alignment of environment studies with both regional source planning activities and other Government entities undertaking infrastructure delivery to facilitate both time and cost savings.
  • Engaging with regulators and other stakeholders including DWER, DCCEEW, DBCA to secure environmental approvals.
  • Contributing to business cases to facilitate assessment in accordance with both internal and Government (e.g. Infrastructure WA) requirements.

Key skills and experience:

  • Degree level qualification in environmental science or related discipline.
  • Substantial experience in environmental impact assessment and approvals.
  • Considerable experience with processes under environmental legislation and their management in a large, diverse, commercial, or regulatory organisation.
  • Considerable experience interacting with regulators, stakeholders, and interest groups.
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge and skill identifying and obtaining environmental approvals to minimise business and compliance risks.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in applying strategic thinking to solve complex problems.
  • Experience in delivering environmental approvals for marine projects (desirable, not essential)
  • Ability to work autonomously and influence multidisciplinary teams to deliver positive environmental outcomes.
