We have an opportunity for a Manager – Environmental Approvals, Regulation and Performance to lead three teams to deliver State and Federal environmental approvals, technical advice across a wide range of environmental disciplines and environmental compliance and performance reporting for Water Corporations Statewide assets.

The opportunity is focused on supporting continuous environmental performance improvement in the operation of Water Corporation assets in alignment to Water Corporation’s Strategy Thrive 2035.

Working in the heart of Perth’s best cosmopolitan hub, our Leederville office is only a skip, hop and a jump from the Leederville train station.

About the role

It is an exciting time to join us. We are embarking on a new long-term strategy, Thrive2035, which will see us deliver on our purpose to manage water services sustainably to make WA a great place to live and invest, and our vision for our people, communities, and the state. We have a clear direction and are passionate about the journey ahead where environmental outcomes are a key pillar.

As a senior leader within the Environment Business Unit and reporting to the Head of Environment, this role will partner with Section Managers and Team Leaders across all business groups to manage and guide the provision of expert environmental advice and guidance to support the acquisition of assets and report on corporate environmental performance.

You’ll step into a highly capable team of energetic professionals, and as a seasoned professional you will provide leadership to a cross disciplined technical environmental advisory function and across the Water Corporation to influence and enable the Corporation to facilitate the delivery of Thrive2035’ through securing environmental approvals and reporting environmental performance.

You will be an important part of an evolving Business Unit currently in the process of defining and embedding Environmental Management System reforms associated with Corporate reporting and performance measurement processes across the wide range of design, operational and governance processes.

What the role will involve

You will collaborate across our Corporation to:

  • Manage the delivery of State and Federal environmental approvals for water and wastewater services including carbon offsets relevant to Water Corporation State-wide assets.
  • Manage the provision of expert advice on a wide range of environmental issues relevant to the management and operation relevant to Water Corporation State-wide assets.
  • Support and ensure the management and governance of Water Corporation’s environmental sustainability requirements are understood and achieved, including and not limited to risk management, performance and reporting, audit and assurance, legal and other requirements (compliance and obligations).
  • Lead and provide technical guidance and advice on risk to environmental values through asset acquisition process including:
  • Determining risk / benefit level per investment priority (funding)
  • Early engagement and option analysis.
  • Ensure environmental considerations integrated in business decisions (EMS-Asset Acquisition).
  • Provide leadership, expert technical advice and review of strategic direction, policy and position statements and support the development and provision of strategic advice on environmental issues and compliance.
  • Manage frameworks and processes to ensure objectives, management and governance of the Corporation requirements are understood and achieved.
  • Manage relationships with key stakeholders including regulators, key customers, government agencies, community and interest groups to facilitate effective environmental management outcomes.

Key skills and experience

  • Environmental Approvals – Demonstrates expert knowledge and skill identifying and obtaining environmental approvals to minimise business and compliance risks.
  • Manage Legal and Regulatory Compliance - Demonstrates expert knowledge and skill applying appropriate legal, regulatory and technical requirements in the delivery of Corporate objectives, understands and considers relevant external drivers to minimise business and compliance risks.
  • Environmental Advocacy and Governance - Demonstrates expert knowledge and skill promoting and leading the Corporation in achieving sustainable environmental outcomes accelerating environmental sustainability.
  • Environmental Assessment – Demonstrates expert knowledge and skill managing the assessment of environmental impacts and identifies solutions to minimise these impacts.
  • As an experienced and engaging leader, you will coach and mentor your section to maximise individual and team potential and performance
  • You will be Degree level qualified in a relevant field and with extensive experience with environmental processes (as appropriate) in relation to planning, environmental risk assessment, approvals processes, operational management and, overall, compliance areas.

You will have substantive experience in leading a multi-disciplinary team of environmental specialists to deliver positive environmental outcomes in accordance with relevant State and Commonwealth project/scheme processes, e.g. Environmental Protection Act 1986 (Parts IV and V), Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
