About the role

We are seeking an experienced Approvals Environmental Specialist to join Water Corporation. In this role, you will lead the delivery of environmental outcomes by providing expertise in environmental approvals under State and Commonwealth environmental regulation. Your responsibilities will encompass leading technical and operational project support, approvals, project approval strategy, and risk management. This role will be based in our Leederville office and will report to the Team Leader – Approvals Delivery Team within the Approvals, Regulation and Performance Section of the Environment Business Unit.

This role will be responsible for developing and executing environmental approvals and management project strategy as it relates to project design across a broad spectrum of project life cycles.

What the role will involve

  • Lead and provide high quality advice, guidance and support navigating State and Commonwealth environmental legislation and associated legal instruments, associated with desalination, water sourcing, pipelines, wastewater treatment and disposal within terrestrial and marine environments across Western Australia.
  • Develop and execute environmental management project strategy across the full project life cycle in Water Corporation assets.
  • Support the management of change for new environmental compliance obligations and legislation changes, including effective communication to stakeholders.
  • Lead project team of consultants/team members to undertake Environmental Impact Assessment Studies and to deliver approvals are obtained within required timeframes.
  • Lead and implement strategic process improvements to enhance the environmental service offering and support to the business.
  • Support improvements to the Environmental Management System, including the development of standards and procedures, to ensure the Corporation meets its environmental management objectives under Thrive 2035.

Key Skills and experience

  • You will have demonstrated experience in leading the development of environmental project approvals, Environmental Impact Assessment and management planning to meet the requirements of Part IV and V of the Environmental Protection Ac 1986 and the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 to secure project approvals. and
  • Considerable knowledge of relevant State and Commonwealth legislation associated with environmental management in the water industry (particularly the Environmental Protection Act 1986 and the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999).
  • Demonstrated experience in securing project outcomes aligned with corporate objectives through working with multidisciplinary teams within and external to your organisation including with Government stakeholders.
  • Capability to work independently, within teams and the ability to establish constructive working relationships within the Water Corporation, with contractors and external stakeholders.
  • Highly development interpersonal, oral and written skills;
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant issues facing the water industry in Australia specifically in wastewater will be desirable.
