About the role:
The Sampling Officer is part of an integrated scientific service team responsible for the accurate and timely collection, analysis, and reporting of environmental and laboratory samples, including water, wastewater, recycled water, and other related samples. This role is critical in ensuring compliance with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and organisational quality systems, including compliance to NATA accreditation. You will support Unitywater’s purpose to deliver reliable, high-quality environmental monitoring and laboratory services, contributing to public health, environmental sustainability, and operational excellence. The role involves using sampling and analytical techniques, field equipment, and laboratory systems to maintain the integrity of data and support informed decision-making by internal and external stakeholders. Key responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
  

  • Collect drinking water, wastewater, recycled water, dam and river water, and other environmental samples using various field techniques and equipment.
  • Utilise emerging technologies such as automated sampling systems, and portable analytical tools to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Conduct field measurements and laboratory analyses in compliance with the laboratory quality system and NATA accreditation standards.
  • Record data accurately, calculate results, perform statistical analysis, and ensure timely reporting of validated results.
  • Compliance to AS ISO/IEC 17025:2017 requirements and supporting internal and external audits.
  • Maintain and calibrate sampling and analytical equipment to ensure operational readiness and compliance with quality standards.

  • A certificate in Laboratory Techniques or Environmental Science or an equivalent qualification from a recognised educational institution. A Degree or Diploma in Science will be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated experience with modern sampling techniques, procedures, and basic analytical processes.
  • A strong understanding of WHS requirements, including conducting detailed risk assessments for sampling sites.
  • Knowledge of routine laboratory processes, including the ability to operate, calibrate, and maintain field and laboratory equipment for sampling and analysis.
  • Experience interacting effectively with internal and external customers, with strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Competent in computer systems with an emphasis on data entry, edit, and reporting within systems such as LIMS; and proficiency in data visualisation tools and Microsoft Suite.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating initiative and problem-solving skills, however also able to contribute effectively to a cohesive team environment.
  • A current open Class C driver’s license is mandatory as is the ability to travel between sampling locations using company vehicles.
