CSIRO’s Energy Research Unit is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Project Engineering Manager with a background in Mechanical, Process, or Thermal Engineering to join our dynamic team. You will join a team of scientists, engineers and economists who are shaping the future of renewable energy in Australia and around the world. We are solving the challenges of industry, and creating new technologies to maximise the uptake of renewable energy, and reduce the cost of energy for all Australians. We are not interested in ivory tower research: our work is built to deliver real change and impact.

You will be working in Australia's national science institution, interacting with some of Australia's largest industries, tackling massive problems, meeting with researchers and scientists from around the world, and delivering practical solutions to incredibly challenging, complex and rewarding problems that can only be solved with some seriously deep thinking across science disciplines.

You will possess strong project management expertise and a proven track record in designing and commissioning high-temperature process systems. This role will suit a motivated individual with the ability to lead teams, engage effectively with clients, and drive the successful development of experimental and process plant projects.

Your duties will include:

  • Lead and oversee the development and execution of experimental and process plant projects, ensuring timely delivery within budget and scope.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, fostering strong relationships and ensuring effective communication throughout the project lifecycle. Drive business development by identifying opportunities and engaging with key stakeholders.
  • Develop experimental test apparatus and process plant designs, with a particular focus on high-temperature applications. Design heat exchangers and high-temperature process components while ensuring adherence to engineering best practices.
  • Design, prototype, and implement mechanical and automated components and systems. Lead commissioning activities and oversee onsite operations as needed.
  • Utilize common engineering design tools, such as CAD software, and apply computational methods and analysis tools, including finite element analysis (FEA), to optimize designs.
  • Other duties as directed.

Location: Newcastle, NSW

Salary: $131k to $153k pa + 15.4% super

Tenure: Specified term of 3 years

To be considered you will need:

  • A Bachelors degree or equivalent technical experience in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, or related discipline), eg substantial relevant experience in high-temperature process design, commissioning, and onsite operations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, evidenced by high-level reporting, presentation and negotiation abilities, and the capacity to identify and influence critical stakeholders to gain support for contentious proposals/ideas.
  • The ability to work effectively as a leader of a multi-disciplinary research and development team to achieve organisational goals.
  • Expertise in developing experimental test setups and process plant systems.
  • Experience designing heat exchangers and working on high-temperature applications.

Desirable:

  • Proficiency with CAD software and computational tools, including FEA.
  • Knowledge of high-temperature thermos-optical concentrator systems or experience in heat and mass transfer systems.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex engineering projects, from planning and development through to successful delivery.
  • Strong communication and leadership abilities, with a proven capacity to supervise and develop engineering teams.
