The opportunity

The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics. Enabled by cutting-edge technology, it promises to have a major impact on society, in science and beyond.

In Australia, the SKAO is collaborating with CSIRO to operate and support the construction of the low frequency telescope (SKA-Low) in remote Western Australia on Wajarri Yamaji Country.

The Traditional Owners and native title holders, the Wajarri Yamaji, have gifted CSIRO with the traditional name Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara for the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, home to the SKA-Low telescope. The traditional name means ‘sharing sky and stars’ in the Wajarri language.

The Administration Officer will provide administrative support to the Engineering Operations Centre (EOC) in Geraldton. The project is in the start-up phase and this position will contribute to the establishment of administrative systems and processes relevant to the project in the new facility. The EOC is the workspace for our construction support, engineering operations and technology integration teams.

Your duties will include:

  • Provide practical and general administrative support to the Geraldton team and in support of key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist the SKA-Low Executive Assistant to coordinate internal and external meetings or other events, including booking rooms, resources, travel, transport, equipment, visitor access and catering.
  • Prepare meeting minutes and initiate follow‐up action.
  • Establish and maintain electronic document management systems.
  • Communicate openly, effectively, and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.

Location: Geraldton, Western Australia

Salary: AU$70,874 - AU$90,202 plus 15.4% superannuation

Tenure: Indefinite – Full-Time, Part-Time or Job-Share

To be considered you will need:

Essential

  • Relevant work experience or qualifications in business administration.
  • Demonstrated high-level skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint, and the ability to quickly learn new systems.
  • Highly developed time management and organisational skills with a proven ability to prioritise competing demands, meet deadlines and escalate issues as appropriate.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish strong interpersonal relationships and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven judgement and ability to maintain confidentiality and respond appropriately to sensitive issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team, positively contributing to the team environment.

Desirable

  • An Australian Class ‘C’ driver’s licence (or equivalent).
  • Experience interacting with project-related and broader community stakeholders.
  • Involved in project start-up or establishing administration systems for new regional offices.
