Esther Loh
Fire Engineer
Researching different fields after completing her undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, Esther was intrigued by the life safety focus of fire engineering, and wanted to learn more about the science and engineering principles behind it.
Enrolling in the postgraduate course not knowing what to expect, Esther describes the choice as one of the best decisions she’s ever made.
Since joining Beca in 2009, Esther has worked on a wide range of projects around New Zealand, lending her knowledge as a fire engineer to specialised buildings such as hospitals, correctional facilities and tertiary teaching institutions.
Her work on a large prison development recently posed many challenges, with the fire engineering design needs directly conflicting with the requirements of a high-security prison. Thanks to an innovative design together with effective stakeholder communication, Esther’s work was a success – recently nabbing her a highly commended award for Outstanding Achievement in Design at the 2017 National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Awards.
When she’s not leading technically challenging projects for Beca, you’ll find Esther travelling New Zealand and abroad, and experimenting with different flavours and dishes in the kitchen.
From the opportunities to develop her design, consulting and management skills, to the social activities that Beca provides, Esther is owning her career with us.
